Translate & Adapt is Shopify's first-party translation app. It's free, it's published by Shopify, and it's installed on hundreds of thousands of stores. It's also genuinely good for what it is — and noticeably limited in ways merchants don't always notice until they've shipped a multilingual launch and started looking at the gaps. Here's an honest review and a clear picture of when it earns its keep, and when you'll want to graduate to a third-party app.

What Is Shopify Translate & Adapt?

Translate & Adapt is Shopify's official translation app for multilingual stores running on Shopify Markets. It auto-translates products, collections, pages, the storefront theme, and (in supported languages) checkout copy. It includes a manual editor for overriding any translation, supports up to two languages on the free plan and more on paid plans, and emits hreflang automatically. It is the recommended first step for any merchant who has just enabled their first non-English market.

What Translate & Adapt Does Well

It's free. It's first-party, so it's tightly integrated with Shopify Markets — no extra setup beyond installing the app. Auto-translation produces decent baseline output for the supported languages. The manual editor is clean and lives in your admin where you'd expect it. Hreflang and URL handling are taken care of automatically. For a merchant launching one or two languages on a small catalog, it's hard to recommend anything else as the starting point.

Where Translate & Adapt Falls Short

The free plan caps at two languages, which is the first ceiling most growing stores hit. Auto-translation quality is solid but not as polished as DeepL or modern LLM-based translation for some language pairs. Glossary support is limited — you can override individual strings, but you can't define a 'always keep this brand name untranslated across every page' rule the way dedicated translation apps can. Image translation, metafield translation, and some advanced theme strings either aren't supported or require manual work. There's no in-app currency switcher or geolocation widget — Translate & Adapt is strictly translation, so multi-currency UX is on you.

When You'll Outgrow Translate & Adapt

Five signals tell you it's time to upgrade. First: you need three or more languages and don't want to pay Shopify's per-language pricing. Second: you're constantly hand-fixing the same brand or product terms across translations because there's no real glossary. Third: you have images with embedded text that need translating. Fourth: you want a customizable language and currency switcher widget. Fifth: you're hitting translation quality issues on specific language pairs and want to choose between GPT, Gemini, or DeepL rather than be locked to one engine.

Translate & Adapt vs. Third-Party Apps Like Lokalize, Weglot, GTranslate

Third-party apps trade Shopify's free integration for more powerful tooling. Lokalize, Weglot, and GTranslate all support more languages, deeper glossary control, image and metafield translation, and bundled language and currency switcher widgets.

The tradeoff is straightforward: pay for capability you'll actually use, or stay free and accept the limits. Our full app comparison goes deeper on each option.

Is Translate & Adapt Free?

Yes, the free plan supports up to two published languages and includes auto-translation. Paid Shopify plans (especially Plus) get more included translations and additional languages. There's no per-word fee on the auto-translation itself — you're constrained by language count, not translation volume.

Does Translate & Adapt Translate Checkout?

Checkout copy translation depends on the language and your Shopify plan. Major languages are supported automatically; less common ones may require a Plus-tier plan or manual editing. Always check your live checkout in each target language before going live — the difference between a translated product page and a half-English checkout is one of the most common translation gaps merchants miss.

Does Translate & Adapt Translate Images?

No — image content with embedded text is not translated by Translate & Adapt. If your product imagery, banners, or campaign images contain text in your source language, you'll need to either upload localized versions per language or use a third-party app like Lokalize that supports image translation.

Should I Use Translate & Adapt or a Third-Party App?

Start with Translate & Adapt if you're launching one or two languages on a small-to-medium catalog with no images that need translating and no aggressive brand-consistency requirements. Move to a third-party app once you need more languages, image translation, a real glossary, a built-in switcher widget, or different translation engines per language. There's no penalty for starting with Translate & Adapt and migrating later — your translations export, and the new app re-imports them as a starting point.

Translate & Adapt is the right default. Most stores should start there. The reason third-party apps exist is that the boundary between 'translation works' and 'translation is brand-consistent, image-aware, multi-language, and on the engine I want' is a real one — and once you cross it, the upgrade pays for itself. Use Translate & Adapt until you've found your second or third real market. Then decide.
