How to Set Up Multi-Currency on Shopify (Without Killing Conversions)

Showing prices in a shopper's local currency is one of the smallest changes you can make to an international Shopify store and one of the highest-impact. Cart abandonment in cross-border commerce drops measurably when shoppers see prices in money they recognize. Here's the practical setup — and the small details that quietly break it for merchants who do it wrong.
How Do You Enable Multi-Currency on Shopify?
On Shopify, multi-currency runs through Shopify Payments and Shopify Markets. From the admin, go to Settings → Payments and add the currencies you want to sell in; then go to Settings → Markets and assign currencies to each market. Add a geolocation-based currency switcher to your storefront, configure price rounding so shoppers don't see €18.37, and verify your checkout displays the local currency end-to-end. That's the whole setup — usually under an hour for a single market.
Enable Shopify Payments Multi-Currency
Shopify Payments supports selling in multiple currencies natively. In Settings → Payments, enable each currency you want to offer. Shopify uses real-time exchange rates and settles back into your home currency — you don't have to maintain a foreign bank account or manage hedging unless you want to. Note that not every currency is supported in every region; Shopify's documentation lists exactly which currencies are available in each country.
Use Geolocation to Auto-Switch Currency
Don't expect customers to find a currency dropdown. Geolocation should set the default currency the moment a visitor lands; the manual switcher is a fallback for the small percentage of users who want to override it. Lokalize's currency switcher includes geolocation out of the box and works alongside Shopify Markets — visitors from Germany default to EUR, visitors from the UK default to GBP, and the switcher remembers their choice between sessions. (See our language switcher design guide for the placement and UX details.)
Price Rounding Strategy
Live exchange rates produce ugly prices: €18.37, ¥2,847, £15.62. Set rounding rules per market so prices read like prices. Common conventions: round EUR and GBP to .99 (€18.99, £15.99), round JPY and KRW to the nearest 100 (¥2,800), round to the nearest whole number for less price-sensitive markets. Shopify Markets supports custom rounding per market — use it. Customers will assume rounded prices are 'real' prices, not converted ones.
Manual Price Overrides for Key Markets
Exchange rates fluctuate, and live conversion can leave you selling at a loss when your home currency strengthens or skip a clean price point in a competitive market. For markets that drive meaningful revenue, set fixed local prices in Shopify Markets rather than relying on live conversion. You keep margin control and you can run market-specific promotions without recalculating exchange rates.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don't display a bare '
#x27; without a currency code — Canadian, Australian, US, Singaporean, and Hong Kong dollars all use the same symbol, and the ambiguity makes shoppers second-guess. Don't forget the checkout: currency switching breaks if the cart and checkout still show your home currency. Don't ignore tax-inclusive pricing requirements — the EU, UK, and Australia expect prices to display tax-inclusive on the storefront, and Shopify supports this per market in tax settings.Does Shopify Convert Currency Automatically?
If you have Shopify Payments enabled and the currency added in your market settings, yes — Shopify converts at live mid-market exchange rates and applies a small currency conversion fee on top. If you're using a third-party payment provider, you'll need to either rely on the provider's conversion or handle conversion yourself with manual fixed prices.
Can I Set Different Prices for Different Countries on Shopify?
Yes. Shopify Markets lets you set fixed prices per market or apply percentage adjustments to your home-currency prices for specific markets. Use this when local competition demands different pricing, when shipping economics change your margins, or when local tax-inclusive requirements force a different headline price. Combine fixed prices with rounding rules for the cleanest result.
